Why Showers Drip, Run Cold or Lose Flow

Three faults cover most shower complaints: a drip that keeps going after the taps are off, water that runs cold or lukewarm, and a spray that has lost its punch.

A drip with the water shut off comes from the mixer, where a tired washer or cartridge lets water slip past the seal. The head is not the culprit there. Water draining from the head for a minute after a shower is normal, and our driipping shower head guide explains how to tell the two apart.

Cold or lukewarm water usually means the cartridge is blending in too much cold. If every hot outlet in the home runs cold, the fault sits with the hot water system rather than the shower.

Weak or patchy flow has three fitting-side causes:

  • limescale clogging the spray holes;
  • a restrictor built into the head;
  • a cartridge too worn to pass full flow.

Low pressure at every tap in the house is a different fault, and it needs its own diagnosis.

Can You Fix a Shower Yourself in Queensland

No, not beyond the head. Queensland's rules let anyone replace a shower head as unregulated work, though the finished job still has to meet the standards. Everything behind it is off limits.

The arm, the wall mixer and the cartridge sit in a different category. Repairing, replacing or removing a fitting or fixture is minor work: it legally needs a licensee, but it needs no council permit and no paperwork to the QBCC.

Adding a new shower outlet, or moving one to a new position, lifts the job again. That is notifiable work in an existing building, so a licensed plumber does it, and a Form 4 goes to the QBCC within 10 business days of completion. The plumber lodges that form and pays its fee, and may pass the cost on to you.

Matching the Fault to the Shower Part

Each part of the shower, from the spray end back to the wall, fails in its own way, and each fault points to a different repair.

  1. Shower head

scale or a restrictor inside it weakens the spray, and water seeping where it screws onto the arm means a loose joint or a worn seal at that join.

  2. Shower arm

the pipe carrying water out of the wall to a fixed head; it can leak at the wall thread.

  3. Rail

holds a handheld head on a hose fed from the wall outlet, and both the hose and the rail work loose over time.

  4. Mixer cartridge

sets the flow and the hot-cold blend, so a worn one shows up as a drip, a stiff handle or the wrong temperature. The plumber matches the cartridge to your mixer.

  5. Diverter

on a shower over a bath, a worn diverter sends water out the spout while the shower runs, or out the head while the bath tap is on.

The exposed parts can be reached without opening the wall. A mixer buried in the wall needs access through tiling, which changes the job.

Showers Across Two Housing Generations

The suburb splits into two shower generations, and the faults follow the age of the room. The older station-side houses have bathrooms that have been refitted more than once, while the newer subdivisions hold a large group of hot water systems and bathrooms only now reaching their first major work.

Area-level figures put 603 dwelling approvals across the five years to 2025, including 183 in 2021-22 alone. Much of that newer stock sits in townhouse-heavy streets such as O'Doherty Circuit in the north and east. Those first-fit showers, mixers and rails wear out on a similar schedule, so whole pockets hit cartridge and rail age together.

When a Shower Repair Becomes a Replacement

Replace the fitting when wear has spread past a washer or cartridge fix, or when the outlet is being added or shifted. Repair when the body is sound and one part has failed.

A replacement has rules of its own. Taps, showers and flow controllers sold in Australia need WaterMark certification plus registration with the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards scheme. A licensed plumber can only legally install a product carrying WaterMark.

New dwellings need showerheads rated 3 stars or better under that scheme, though the rule does not reach renovations. For a Queensland rental, tenancy rules say the head has to run at no more than 9 litres a minute before a landlord can charge a tenant for the full water bill.

A full replacement is also the moment to rethink the room. Our bathroom renovation plumbing page maps a whole-room refit, and our vanity and basin installation page covers the basin side of the same job.

Shower Repair Questions From Nudgee

Call (07) 3523 7172

What causes low shower pressure in Nudgee?

Limescale blocking the spray nozzles, a flow restrictor in the head, or a worn mixer cartridge are the usual fitting-side causes. Weak flow right through the home points to a whole-of-house pressure fault instead, which we trace separately.

Do I need a plumber to install a new shower in Nudgee?

Yes, a licensed plumber has to do it. Adding or relocating a shower outlet is classed as notifiable work, and a Form 4 goes to the QBCC within 10 business days of finishing.

Does a shower mixer swap need a Form 4?

No, a like-for-like mixer change is minor work, which needs a licensee but no permit and no Form 4. A new or relocated fixture falls into the notifiable category and does need one.

How many litres a minute can a rental showerhead use?

No more than 9 litres a minute. Under Queensland tenancy rules, that flow rate is one condition a landlord has to meet before charging a tenant for the full water bill.

When should I replace a shower instead of repairing it?

Replace when the failed part is worn out beyond a washer change or a new cartridge, or when you want an outlet added or moved. A sound fixture with one failed part is worth repairing.
