Repair or Replace a Tap or Toilet

A drip, a running cistern or a slow fill usually traces back to a worn part inside, so the everyday fix is a repair rather than a whole new fixture. A crack changes that answer.

The pattern looks like this:

  1. A dripping washer tap

generally needs a fresh washer, or the valve seat dressed smooth if years of turning have grooved it.

  2. A dripping mixer

generally needs a replacement ceramic disc cartridge, the paired discs inside that do the shutting off.

  3. A running, leaking or slow-filling cistern

is most often cured by fitting a replacement inlet valve and a new outlet washer, provided the cistern body is sound.

  4. A cracked tap body, cistern or pan

is where repairing stops, because no washer fixes split porcelain.

  5. A fixture back for its third repair

can cost less over time to replace than to keep patching, and we weigh that up job by job.

Housing age shapes what we find. At the last census, 85.1 per cent of Nudgee homes were separate houses.

Much of the older stock clusters on the streets around Showground Park on Hayden Street, where taps and cisterns have simply had more years of service. Newer builds out toward Childs Road Park on the eastern side run modern mixers, and their faults are usually cartridge jobs.

What WELS Stars and Flow Limits Mean

WELS stands for Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards, the national scheme that registers taps, toilets and other fixtures for water efficiency. The label carries a star rating and shows the fixture's water use, so products can be compared before buying.

Two sets of numbers matter for Queensland owners:

  1. New builds

a new house, townhouse or self-contained unit needs a dual flush cistern rated 4 stars or better, with tap fittings and showerheads at 3 stars minimum. Renovations are exempt from those minimums.

  2. Rentals

an owner can bill a Queensland tenant for all their water only when the fixtures meet flow caps. Cold taps indoors and single mixer taps stay at or under 9 litres a minute. A dual flush cistern uses no more than 6.5 litres full flush and 3.5 half flush, averaging 4 litres.

The cap applies to cold taps over a basin, sink or laundry tub, mixers included. Taps on a bath, outdoor garden taps and taps feeding a washing machine or dishwasher sit outside the cap.

One more rule before anything gets installed: taps, toilets and cisterns carry two marks, WaterMark certification and WELS registration. The WaterMark certification is a licensed plumber's legal ticket to fit the fixture. If you're choosing tapware for a bathroom near Alexander Macpherson Park, check both marks on the box.

The Water Bill Cost of a Slow Leak

No, the utility's concealed leak adjustment does not cover water a dripping tap sends down the drain or a running cistern keeps using. The owner holds responsibility for leaks on the property and the losses they cause.

The adjustment is there for pipe leaks hidden under ground or inside walls. A fixture you can see and hear doesn't qualify.

The meter records every drop, whatever the reason. Even a slow drip can send thousands of litres to waste over months.

A cistern that never quite shuts off runs the meter around the clock, whether the fixture sits in a Somers Street cottage or a new townhouse.

The practical upshot: a dripping tap is a small repair that prevents a large bill. Fixing it promptly keeps the loss off your Urban Utilities account, because no adjustment covers it later.

Where Home Owner Repairs Stop in Queensland

Queensland leaves home owners a short unregulated list of tap and toilet work. It covers a tap's washer and jumper valve, plus three cistern parts: the drop valve washer, then the float valve washer and its suction cup rubber.

That work needs no licence, no approval and no report, though the result still has to comply with the plumbing code.

Everything past that list is ours:

  1. Replacing a whole tap takes a licence

the QBCC guide names that exact job as outside the home owner's list.

  2. Fixing or changing a tap or toilet fitting is minor work

a licensee does it, and no permit or Form 4 applies.

  3. Installing a new toilet, or moving one inside an existing building, is notifiable work

The council permit is skipped, and we send the QBCC a Form 4 within 10 business days of finishing.

The line is easy to remember. Washers on the QBCC's list are yours to change; anything involving the fixture itself, the pipework behind it or the drainage under it is ours.

The Tap and Toilet Jobs We Cover

Each fixture type has its own page, because the parts and the faults differ:

  • Tap repairs: washers, jumper valves, ceramic disc cartridges, spouts and handles, plus mixers that drip at the base.
  • Toilet repairs: inlet and outlet valves, seals, pan connectors, weak flushes and cisterns that keep running.
  • Outdoor tap repairs: garden taps, hose bibs and the fittings that cop the weather, from a yard near the Nudgee Recreation Reserve off Elliott Road to the streets backing the golf club.

Blocked toilets belong to our blocked drains page, and if the fault is flooding rather than dripping, the emergency plumber page covers what to do first.

Questions About Tap and Toilet Repairs

Call (07) 3523 7172

Which tap and toilet problems can a plumber fix in Nudgee?

We fix drips at the spout, handle or base, cisterns that run or fill slowly, weak flushes, and tired stop taps and connections. The tap repairs page and the toilet repairs page break each fault down.

What do WELS stars on a tap or toilet mean?

The stars come from WELS, the national water efficiency scheme. A registered product shows its star rating and a water-use figure on the label. Taps, toilets and cisterns also carry WaterMark certification, which a licensed plumber needs before fitting the fixture legally.

Are there water flow limits for taps and toilets in a rental?

Yes, Queensland tenancy rules set flow caps first. Cold taps indoors and single mixer taps are limited to 9 litres a minute. A dual flush cistern is capped at 6.5 litres full flush, 3.5 half flush, and 4 litres on average.

What affects the cost of a tap or toilet repair?

The price turns on the part that failed, the tap or cistern type, and whether the seat, body or porcelain has taken damage. How easy the isolation valves are to reach matters too. A fixed quote settles it once the plumber has seen the job.

Who looks after the pipe to my tap, me or the water utility?

Urban Utilities maintains the street mains up to the meter. Every pipe and fitting on your side of the meter, out to the taps, is yours to maintain as the owner.

Is there a surcharge for a weekend toilet repair in Nudgee?

No, there's no extra charge for nights, weekends or public holidays, and every job comes with $0 call-out fees.
