Leak Detection in Nudgee

200+ five-star Google reviews

Water getting out where you cannot see it is the whole reason leak detection in Nudgee exists. A hidden leak can sit under a drive, in a wall cavity or beneath a slab and waste litres by the thousand each day before anything looks wrong. Nudgee Same Day Plumbing tracks it down, and a licensed plumber confirms it before any surface comes up.

Your water meter is the best witness you own. Read it the right way and it tells you whether water is escaping, and whether the escape is yours to fix. This page runs through the signs, the test and the bill rules, and it sits alongside our water pipe repairs work across Nudgee.

What a Wet Patch or High Bill Is Telling You

The signs of a hidden leak sort by where they turn up, and a bill that climbs is the thread linking them. Check each place in turn:

  1. At the meter

the dial creeping around while the whole house is shut down.

  2. Inside

damp patches, water marks on walls or the ceiling, a musty smell, paint or finishes lifting, or a floor that feels warm in one spot.

  3. Outside

ground that stays wet, or one patch of lawn lusher than the rest.

One sign on its own proves little. Two together, with a bill that has jumped, says water is going somewhere it should not. A warm patch underfoot usually means hot water is feeding the leak, so treat that one as urgent.

How a Plumber Pinpoints a Hidden Leak

The search follows a set sequence: confirm at the meter, divide the line into stretches, pressure-test each stretch, then home in before anything is opened. No guesswork, and no pulling up tiles on a hunch.

Only then does anything get opened. A licensed plumber does the lot, because the result has to stand up for a bill claim as well as a repair. If the fault turns out to be a line that has let go completely, our burst pipe repairs page sets out the emergency response.

  1. 1

    Confirm the leak

The meter reading comes first, because it proves water is being drawn while nothing in the place is running.

  2. 2

    Isolate the line

Each stretch of pipe gets closed off from the rest, one at a time.

  3. 3

    Pressure-test each stretch

Whichever stretch drops in pressure is the one carrying the fault.

  4. 4

    Narrow it down

An ear against the pipe where it is exposed, plus moisture readings across walls, floors and the subfloor, map where the water escapes.

The Meter Test That Proves a Leak

Here is the whole test: with the house shut down, record the meter, give it a full hour, then read it again. Any change in the reading or the dial suggests a leak.

The steps, in order:

  1. Turn off every fixture and appliance that uses water: taps, the hose, the washing machine, the dishwasher, any plumbed-in fridge and the irrigation.
  2. Photograph the meter, with the red figures in the photo.
  3. Leave the stop tap at the meter alone, and let nothing in the house or garden draw water for a full hour, longer if you can.
  4. Read the meter again. A changed number, or a dial still creeping, points to a leak.

The result also splits the responsibility. The meter only turns when water moves through it, so movement puts the escape on the house side of the meter, which is yours.

Wet ground while the dial holds still usually means a main belonging to the utility, and water pooling inside the meter box goes to them too. Bring those to the utility rather than to a plumber. If the test comes back clean but the signs persist, our hidden leak guide takes the hunt further.

Where Nudgee Houses Hide Their Leaks

The oldest stock gives water somewhere to hide. Houses from before 1947 can still carry galvanised supply lines, and that old steel lets go at corroded threads. The first hint is often a damp strip in the garden, well before anything shows indoors.

The newer streets hide leaks differently. Townhouse blocks around Weyers Road and Queens Road were fitted out in single stages, so their pipework ages together. One slow weep in a unit there often sends neighbours to their meters the same week. When the real problem is pipe scaling rather than one failure, flow drops first, and our low water pressure page explains that chain.

Water Bill Relief for a Hidden Leak

A concealed leak can earn a bill adjustment when three things line up. It has to sit out of sight on the property side of the meter, the repair must land inside the utility's time limit, and a licensed plumber's invoice has to back it. The rules, as Urban Utilities sets them:

  • The leak has to be one you had no reasonable way of noticing: under concrete, under the house, or in a wall.
  • Repair it within a month of learning about it, and the work has to be a lasting repair.
  • The account holder lodges the claim in writing with the plumber's invoice.
  • Claims close twelve months after the repair, only two quarters of usage can be corrected, and the usage claim is one per property.

Not every leak counts. Dripping taps, running cisterns and faulty appliances (hot water systems included) are excluded, along with irrigation and sprinklers, pools, spas and ponds. That is why the meter reading matters: it tells a genuine concealed leak apart from a running cistern, which is a smaller fix handled on a different page.

Leak Detection Questions From Nudgee

Call (07) 3523 7172

Will the water utility reduce my bill for a hidden leak?

Yes, when the leak fits what the utility calls a concealed leak. It has to be invisible from the surface and on the property side of the meter, repaired inside the time limit, and backed by an invoice signed by a licensed plumber. Dripping taps, running cisterns and faulty appliances never qualify.

How long do I have to repair a hidden leak?

Get it done within a month of learning about the leak. How fast that happens turns on where the pipe sits and how easily we reach it, and the repair is priced by a fixed quote before work starts. Keep the invoice for the claim.

Does a hidden leak claim work differently for tenants and units?

Yes, the path changes. If the utility tells a tenant about a suspected leak, the owner or agent is taken to know from that date. In a community titles scheme with sub-metered lots, each lot owner lodges a claim for their own pipework and the body corporate handles shared land.

Why is my water bill so high in Nudgee?

A leak is one common cause, and the meter reading rules it in or out against ordinary use. Shut everything down, note the meter, and read it again after a full hour. Movement means water is escaping, so bring in a licensed plumber.

Who pays for a hidden leak on my property in Nudgee?

The owner does. All the water the meter counts is billed to you, leaks included, and the repair is yours as well. Relief exists only under the utility's policy for concealed leaks, which is why the invoice and the time limit matter.
